FAQ - Play Slides
What do I have to consider when planning a slide?
EN1176 provides guidelines on that question. In order to avoid direct sun radiation, slide exits should not face south. If that is inevitable, the exit should be positioned in a shady area. Besides, it is advantageous for the slide to point towards the play area to allow supervision of sliding children.
Up to what height can slides be of an open design?
Acc. to EN1176, a height of free fall of 300 cm is principally permissible for toys. Depending on the respective federal state, different and more frequently lower heights apply within childcare facilities. If higher than 300 cm, toy slides must either be closed or have to be equipped with a heightened side-guard of at least 50 cm throughout. In the case of toy slides of a sliding gradient of more than 60°, side guards must be at least 70 cm high.
What dimensions are required for the safety area at the slide exit?
EN1176 stipulates a side distance of at least 1 meter and at least 2 metres in front. Under certain circumstances this safety area can also be smaller. Let atlantics advise you on that.
What are the possibilities for designing the safety area at the slide exit?
Acc. to DIN EN1176, the ground (fall protection) of the safety area must be prepared with shock-absorbing material,. This can be made from different material. For more information in this regard, please see page 18 in this catalogue.
What height above ground is permissible for the slide exit?
In the case of slides of a length of less than 150 cm of the sliding section, the slide exit may end max. 20 cm above ground. In the case of slides of a sliding section longer than 150 cm, the slide exit may end up to 350 cm above ground.
How steep is a slide actually permitted to be?
As a standard, slides are manufactured at gradients between 30° and 40°. But, acc. to DIN EN1176 Part 10, gradients of up to 75° are also possible. These so-called free-fall amusement slides are only to be found in amusement parks, since strict safety regulations must be observed when using them and increased requirements apply in order to avoid accidents.
What diameter do tunnel slides have to have?
The minimum diameter for a tunnel slide is 75 cm. In order to provide for enough space for adults, atlantics manufactures all its tunnel slides in a diameter of 80 cm and, thereby, is 5 cm above the standard.
